Widelands is currently (and will always be) under development - you can get a feel for what is worked on by looking at the changelog. Everybody is invited to help out too - we need 2D and 3D artists, sound effect creators, composers, map makers, translators, test players, web programmers and C++ coders. All skill levels are welcome - just start working on something or ask in the forums for pointers.

Widelands 1.0 Released

The Widelands Development Team is proud to announce the immediate availability of the stable release Widelands 1.0, the first-ever stable release after the end of the beta Builds series.

Since the release of Build 21, we implemented several hundreds of new features and bugfixes; for example, to name just a few of the highlights:

    A new tribe: the Amazons
    An add-on system
    A third frisians scenario
    Dynamic tribe loading to speed up game loading
    Targeting individual map objects for removal
    Mute/unmute messages by buildings
    Fully redesigned main menu
    Configurable keyboard shortcuts
    Enhanced keyboard and mousewheel support in the UI
    Long-term stable Lua API for game content designers

Widelands 1.0 is translated completely into German, Hungarian and Low German, and the translations for 12 other languages are more than ⅔ complete.

Widelands is distributed for Windows (64-bit and 32-bit) and Mac OS X >= 10.7 (Intel, 64-bit) and in source code. For Linux users, we provide a Flatpak package and a Ubuntu PPA and try to make compiling as easy as possible, and most distributions will pick up Widelands 1.0 into their repositories very quickly. Both binary and source packages are available from GitHub and our Download page.


About Widelands

In Widelands, you are the regent of a small tribe. You start out with nothing but your headquarters, a kind of castle in which all your resources are stored. In the course of the game, you will build an ever growing settlement. Every member of your tribe will do his or her part to produce more resources - wood, food, iron, gold and more - to further this growth. But you are not alone in the world, and you will meet other tribes sooner or later. Some of them may be friendly and trade with you. However, if you want to rule the world, you will have to train soldiers and fight.

Widelands offers a unique style of play. For example, a system of roads plays the central role of your economy: all the goods that are harvested and processed by the tribe must be transported from one building to the next. This is done by carriers, and those carriers always walk along the roads. It is your job to lay out the roads as efficiently as possible.

Another refreshing aspect of the game is the way you command your tribe. There is no need to tell every single one of your subjects what to do - that would be impossible, because there can be thousands of them! Instead, all you've got to do is order them to build a building somewhere, and the builders will come. Similarly, whenever you want to attack an enemy, just place an order to attack one of their barracks, and your soldiers will march to fight. You're really a ruler: You delegate in times of war and in times of peace!

Widelands offers single-player mode with different campaigns; the campaigns all tell story's of tribes or Empires and their struggle in the Widelands universe! However, settling really starts when you unite with friends over the Internet or LAN to build up new empires together - or to crush each other in the dusts of war. Widelands also offers an Artificial Intelligence to challenge you.

In the end, Widelands will be extensible, so that you can create your own type of tribe with their own sets of buildings. You can create new worlds to play in, and you could even create new types of worlds (who says you can't build a settlement on the moon?).


Status

As stated before, Widelands is a work-in-progress game and, it seems, that it will ever be one. New features are added in each release. So, if you miss a feature, let us know. The current version has got at least these features:

    * Four Worlds (Tile Sets) (Greenland, Winterland, Blackland and Desert)
    * Three Tribes (Barbarians, Imperials and Atlanteans)
    * 4 playable single player tutorial missions (Barbarians and Imperials)
    * Maps for single and multi player mode
    * Save and load multi player games (well kind of)
    * Ability to build a settlement from scratch
    * Basic military support (Attacking, Training, rudimentary defending, no conquering - only destroying)
    * A mapeditor, to build your own maps and campaigns

We release beta versions ("builds") often, so that you can keep up with the state of the art all the time. Simply head over to the Download-section, you will find the newest release there.
