Ready to Help, Worldwide

Whenever a Lions club gets together, problems get smaller. And communities get better. That's because we help where help is needed – in our own communities and around the world – with unmatched integrity and energy.

Our 45,000 clubs and 1.35 million members make us the world's largest service club organization.

We're also one of the most effective. We get the job done.

We recently:

Brought 3,000 volunteers together to build a playground for children of all abilities in California, USA.
Fed 60,000 people in a township in South Africa. It's something Lions do there every day.
Sent a team of eye surgeons to Honduras to treat more than 100 adults and children.

Everywhere we work, we make friends. With children who need schoolbooks, with seniors who need transportation and with people we may never meet.

We're led by talented, dedicated volunteer leaders from around the world. And, we're supported by the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), which helps to fund Lions humanitarian projects.

The International Headquarters for both Lions Clubs International and the LCIF is in Oak Brook, Illinois, USA.

Life-Changing Services and Opportunities for Youth

Around the world, if we see a need, we fill that need. In 45,000 communities in more than 200 countries, Lions implement targeted, creative projects to meet the specific needs of local children – whether they're at risk for hearing or vision loss or can't afford to have their bikes repaired.

Our programs make growing up safer and healthier. Through Services for Children, we meet education and health needs. Through Lions Quest, we bring crucial life skills to classrooms. We also respond to issues that cry out for solutions and support – by bringing potable water to far-flung villages, building a home for street children in Sri Lanka. And through a number of other programs uniquely suited to match local challenges in communities around the world.

We bring young people together. Our Leo clubs inspire and support volunteerism and leadership in young people ages 12 and up by giving them the chance to learn, grow and serve by participating in community service projects.

We enhance their lives. Every year, thousands of young people travel around the world to learn about cultures, customs and friendship through our Youth Camp and Exchange program.

And we help them share a message of peace. For decades, the Peace Poster Contest has helped young people express their creativity, their aspirations and their hopes for the world.

The Joy of Sight

When areas of Sri Lanka were devastated by the tsunami of 2004, more than 2.5 million people were displaced by the tragedy – and thousands lost their eyeglasses and their ability to see clearly.

Working together, Lions in Sri Lanka and Massachusetts collected more than 30,000 usable eyeglasses.

With support from Lions Clubs International Foundation and Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers worldwide, the Lions In Sight Foundation of California and Nevada sent an emergency mission team to provide eye examinations, eyeglasses and training to help local Lions run a permanent clinic and eyeglass recycling program.
In all, 100,000 pairs of eyeglasses were provided, giving thousands the sight they needed to read, study, manage daily tasks and earn a living.

Lions Work to Improve Sight

Through efforts like these, Lions have gained worldwide recognition for our work to improve sight:

We recycle glasses at 17 centers worldwide.
We support Lions Eye Banks, which annually provide quality eye tissue for 30,000 sight-saving surgeries, medical education and eye research.
We screen the vision of hundreds of thousands of people every year.
We provide cataract surgeries and other eye care services to those at risk of losing their sight.
We raise donations through programs like SightFirst and Campaign SightFirst II.

In 1925, Helen Keller challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." And we accepted. Today, sight programs remain one of our defining causes.

Today's Children Need Lions More Than Ever

Millions of children suffer from poverty, homelessness, hunger, abuse, neglect, disease and disabilities. Tragically, these children often must live without essential health and education services that would alleviate their distress – and give them hope for the future. That's why the Lions Services for Children Program continues Lions Clubs International's long tradition of helping the world's future generations.

Lions Services for Children Projects

The problems children face vary in degree from country to country, but the need for health and education services is constant and universal. Lions clubs help address these needs by developing projects with specific, attainable goals, including:

Collecting food, clothes or books
Organizing a vision or hearing screening
Providing immunizations through a vaccination drive
Starting a literacy program with a local school, library, community center or Leo club
Supporting a nutritional program for undernourished children
Securing wheelchairs for disabled children
Sending a child with diabetes or physical challenges to a specialized camp

Lions have also constructed hospitals, schools, orphanages and children's centers throughout the world to serve youth in need.
