Would you like a FREE NEW Computer? Try a new OS - Ubuntu - on your Hardware!

Would you like a FREE NEW Computer?   Just try a new operating system on your old Hardware! The hardware does nothing without the operating system: the Operating System (or OS) performs all of the display drawing and interface functions and is, in essence, the 'personality' and 'look' and 'feel' of your computer.

Do you have an Old SLOW Computer somewhere around the house or garage?

Are you using Windows 95 on a Pentium II? Are you still using Mac OS 9 on a G3 or G4 PPC Apple Macintosh?  Have Microsoft® or Apple® stopped supporting your OS?

If you 'run' your old unused hardware with a different OS than the one you are used to, you have a "New" computer system! (It's NEW to You ... ) It has a completely different look and feel and, since it still supports your old hardware, it should be noticeably faster than the previous computer you ran on this same old hardware was!

And, get this: this 'new computer' system is virus / trojan / spyware / and worm free! You never should have to worry about anti-virus or anti-spyware software again! ALL the Software you need to run a business or classroom is already built in - a very long list of it: and PLENTY of Games, and Media players (for CD's or DVD's)

No installation is required: in Knoppix you can type demo at the starting prompt, or choose "Start Ubuntu" in Ubuntu, and the entire system will load and run from the CD - even if there is no hard drive installed or if your hard drive got fried! And you have a variety of choices of live demo CD's to sample from depending upon your needs.

I personally have tried 2 different flavors of new OS on my old computers! I've used these CDs to test old computers (even if they got put in storage because the hard drive failed)! I love them but it's been a while since I played with them. I know they have only gotten faster and have better features than before, so I whole-heartedly recommend you try them out as Demo CDs.

Features

OpenOffice - A complete productivity suite

Word Processor has everything you would expect from a modern, fully equipped word processor or desktop publisher. It's simple enough for a quick memo, powerful enough to create complete books with contents, diagrams, indexes, etc. You're free to concentrate on your message - while Word Processor makes it look great. The Wizards feature takes all the hassle out of producing standard documents such as letters, faxes, agendas, minutes, or carrying out more complex tasks such as mail merges.

Spreadsheet is the programe you've always wanted. Newcomers find it intuitive and easy to learn; professional data miners and number crunchers will appreciate the comprehensive range of advanced functions. Of course, you are free to use your old Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, or save your work in Excel format for sending to people who still use Microsoft products. If all they want to see is your results, then use Portable Document Format (.pdf) - no need to buy any extra software.

Presentation is an outstanding tool for creating effective multimedia presentations. Your presentations will stand out with 2D and 3D clip art, special effects, animation, and high-impact drawing tools. A complete range of views are supported: Drawing / Outline / Slides / Notes / Handouts to meet all the needs of presenters and audiences, plus an optional multi-pane view to put all the tools at your fingertips.

Integrated email and calendaring

Whether you need to simply check your email, create a calendar or search for a contact, Evolution can help you.

New features in Evolution 2.8.0 include vertical message panes. See your email the way you want it. Search Folders are saved intelligent searches which can display groups of email according to your specified criteria. Create Search Folders to combine mail from different mail accounts into a single view, quickly view all mail from your boss (or a particular friend).

Easy note-taking with Tomboy

Tomboy is a desktop note-taking application. It is simple and easy-to-use, but with potential to help you organise the ideas and information you deal with every day. Tomboy relates notes and ideas together. Using a wiki-like linking system, organising ideas is as simple as typing a name.

Safe, easy and tabbed web browsing

Firefox 2.0 is a powerful, award-winning and standards compliant web browser. With tabbed browsing you'll be able to use one window to view all your web pages.

New features in 2.0 include inline spell check support in web forms, restore session that crashed, built in phishing detectors, better support for previewing and subscribing to web feeds, enhanced search engine management with built in OpenSearch support, and much more.

Easy editing and uploading of photos

F-spot enables you to import your photos from your hard drive, camera (including PTP type), or iPod, and supports 16 common files types, including JPEG, GIF, TIFF, RAW. Your photos can be tagged for searching and grouping. Other features include fullscreen and slideshow modes.

Editing photos in F-Spot is a breeze. Easily rotate, crop, resize, and adjust red eye and other colour settings with a few simple clicks, and versioning ensures your originals are never altered. You can also enter descriptions of photos that are saved in the actual file so other people and programmes will be able to see them, whether they use F-Spot or not.

Music and videos

Rhythmbox media player has a number of features that let you easily store, search and browse your music library and listen to internet radio. You can also view films, or videos, using Totem which features a play list, a full-screen mode, seek and volume controls and keyboard navigation.

System Requirements

Ubuntu is available for PC, 64-Bit and Mac architectures. CDs require at least 256 MB of RAM. Install requires at least 2 GB of disk space.

Desktop CD

The desktop CD allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all
, and at your option to install it permanently later. This type of CD is what most people will want to use. You will need at least 192MB of RAM to install from this CD.

See the release notes for known issues installing from this CD. This image is not suitable for upgrading from previous releases; see the upgrade instructions for that.

There are three images available, each for a different type of computer:

PC (Intel x86) desktop CD
For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows. Choose this if you are at all unsure.
Mac (PowerPC) desktop CD
For Apple Macintosh G3, G4, and G5 computers, including iBooks and PowerBooks.
64-bit PC (AMD64) desktop CD
For computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon). It is not necessary for all (even most) processors made by AMD -- only their 64 bit chips.

Here is a Master List of (300+) new computer systems to 'live cd demo' run on old or new hardware of any kind (even xbox!)
 http://www.livecdlist.com/?pick=All&sort=Name&sm=0

I like: Ubuntu, Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Knoppix, Knoppix for Kids, Gnoppix, Puppy Linux (60 megabytes: can run a new computer from a $5 USB 'keychain drives' and it is SO cute besides), Gentoo, and GamesKnoppix amongst the many I've looked at.

All of these are 'live demo CDs' that run (boot your hardware) from the CD Drive and most of them will run just fine using from 128M - 256M of RAM (as a RAM Drive) even without a hard drive. Nothing is installed to your hardware so when you're done and remove the CD and reboot your hardware is exactly as you last saw it.

Supported Architectures:

x86: AMD and Intel computers, could include optimizations from the 386 to the Pentium IV to the Athlon XP

x86-64: Computers with chips that use the AMD64 64-bit extensions, known in the Intel camp as EM64T. These chips include the Athlon64, Opteron, Pentium 4 600 series, Pentium D, Core 2 Duo, and modern Xeons

PPC: PowerPC chips, including the Apple G3, G4, and G5 (in 32-bit mode), possibly other IBM Power chips

PPC64: PowerPC 64-bit chips, including the Apple G5, possibly other IBM Power chips

Eden: LiveCDs specifically made for the VIA Eden platform. Because these are based on the x86 instruction set, x86 LiveCDs may work too.

Xbox: Made for the XBox, may require software or hardware mods to run

IA-64: Itanium and Itanium2 platforms

Sparc64: SUN Sparc 64-bit platform

Alpha: Alpha platform, once made by DEC, then Compaq, and now being phased out by HP

Mips: Some SGI platforms

HPPA: Also known as PA-RISC, made by HP, also being phased out

[/size]
Primary Functions:

Desktops: provides a working GUI desktop environment with a collection of desktop programs, such as browsers and text editors. Many also include utilities for other purposes, such as home entertainment, but are only listed here because the additional functions are not their primary focus.

OS Replacement: provides an option to transfer the cd to the hard drive, or to install an OS in a different form

Education: provides a collection of educational programs, or was created to be used in the educational field

Rescue: provides tools needed for data recovery

Clustering: provides tools for making clusters (yum! clusters!)

Security: contains network security tools

Home Entertainment: geared towards playing video and audio

Gaming: video games!

Medical: contains medical programs

Diagnostics: contains utilities for testing hardware

Firewalls: distributions created to be used as firewalls

Forensics: distributions containing forensic tools

Servers: distributions used for various server functions

ISO Size:

The ISO min size and ISO max size refer to distributions which have different size images of the current release. Sizes over 700MB may require overburning to be put onto a CD, or be a LiveDVD ISO. Many LiveCDs can also be copied onto and booted from USB drives.
