Wing Commander Privateer Remake is a Cross Platform RPG for Windows / Mac OS X / LINUX

Quote
Wing Commander Privateer Remake. The original Privateer is a well loved game, with incredible graphics and gameplay for its day. Built on an open source codebase, the Remake is a community effort to bring the universe of the original into the 21st century, playable on all modern operating systems (win, mac, linux), and in 3d glory.

Privateer gives you the freedom to carve your own path in the Wing Commander universe. Opportunity abounds in the Gemini Sector. Wedged between the unknown frontier and the Kilrathi Empire, Gemini is home to various competing factions with which you can choose to align yourself.

Upgrade your ship or trade it in to deal with the demands of a Privateer. Find your fortune by logging into the mission computer, or take your chances with seedy characters in bars. Meet up with Sandoval in New Detroit, tilt back a glass with Demetria in a Munchen bar in the Tingerhoff System. Make your way as a trader, traitor, bounty hunter, or pirate. Only you can imagine what you might encounter beyond the frontier. Happy privateering!

What is the Privateer Remake?

The Remake is a freely available game, patterned after the original, and built using the open source Vegastrike engine.

What are the system requirements for running the Privateer Remake?

The Remake runs on Windows, Linux and Mac OSX. Most common hardware purchased after 2000 should be able to run the game, 3d acceleration at the level of geForce2 or better is recommended.

Is this game open ended? Is there a storyline?

The plot from the original game is included (plus a bonus plot) but the player is free to ignore them and do whatever he or she wants.

Is there a multiplayer mode?

Not at this time (unless one counts the poorly supported and undocumented split-screen mode). Such a feature may be developed in the future for the Vegastrike engine.

I just started the game and nothing is happening. Is it frozen?

Loading delays are normal, especially when you run the game for the first time. It takes time to generate the BSP trees. This could also be an issue with your firewall. See the next question.

OK, I waited, and it's really frozen! or It runs, but I get no music!

If you are running a firewall, such as Windows XP's built in firewall, you must configure the firewall to allow the computer to connect to itself (127.0.0.1). The XP firewal pops up an annoying message about blocking the soundserver, ifyou are in fullscreen, this can freeze your display. Start the game in windowed mode to acknowledge the popup. (choose a windowed mode in the setup program)

How do I eject cargo?

Some missions require you to eject cargo. You can eject your mission cargo by pressing 'shift-x' repeatedly. 'Ctrl-x' can be used to dump all of your cargo (to appease pirates for example).
