Cenon - Graphics Software of the finest

Cenon is a graphical tool of a special kind. Build upon a modular graphical core, Cenon offers a wide variety of possibilities and applications.
The best of all, the Cenon core is free software, available with full source codes, and at home on many computer platforms.

Cenon is being developed with love. The clean user interface on Apple, Linux and other systems (using GNUstep) creates a pleasant user experience.

   Desktop Publishing
The field of desktop publishing is a new speciality of Cenon. Freeing images, complex paths, text functions, color shading, printing, and a multitude of import- and export abilities - simply good, and totally free.

DTP - Desktop Publishing

In the field of design and publishing, Cenon has been improved massivly to even satisfy high demands.

Cenon does the trick and combines simple handling with professional possibilities. Besides the general design abilities of Cenon, the following list of features stick out in the field of DTP:

    * Color shading (gradual, radial, axial)
    * Exposing of images
    * Thumbnails of images
    * Generous text functions
    * Vectorisation of images
    * Color Separation

Vector Graphics Conversion
Cenon supports a good range of Import- and Export formats. This allows the conversion of all supported formats in any other format. The imported data can be edited. Conversion of the formats PostScript, PDF, DXF, HPGL, Gerber, Drill-Data and others are part of the Import- and Export libraries of the Cenon core.

Vector Graphics Conversion
Cenon can be used to convert quite a number of vector graphic formats in any desired direction. Cenon also allows editing of the data.

The import of Cenon is used to read the graphics file. The format is automatically recognized by the file extension. After the file is imported, it is fully editable like any other Cenon document. The export allows writing to any of the supported file formats.

Cenon brings worlds together

DXF
PostScript
Adobe Illustrator
DIN-Formate
HPGL
Gerber
PDF

PostScript, PDF

PostScript Import

Cenon works hand in hand with the well known GhostScript interpreter or the Display PostScript of your system. Also PDF is read using the GhostScript interpreter.

PostScript Export

Cenon exports EPS or PS data. The generated EPS data of Cenon is a straight and simple PostScript without tricks, and should be readable by any other program.

Adobe Illustrator (AI)

The Adobe Illustrator format can be imported using the PostScript prologues from Adobe. This procedure could be extended to other formats, which are similar to the PostScript format.

DXF - Data Exchange Format

DXF-Import

The DXF import allows import of two dimensional data. The extention towards 3-D is planned.

DXF-Export

On export of DXF, simple and straight forward data is written, which should be readable anywhere.

Gerber

Gerber Import

The Gerber format is widely used in the area of electronics in the production of printed circuit boards (PCB). Cenon imports the older Gerber format as well as the newer Extended Gerber (RS274X), which supports complex polygons.

Gerber Export

Cenon always writes Extended Gerber files.

Other Data Formats

HPGL

Cenon allows the import of HPGL derivates. Configuration files allow the configuration of different file formats for import as well as for export.

DIN formats

Cenon reads and writes derivates of the DIN data format. Examples are Sieb&Meyer, Wessel and Excellon. So far, the import is limited to drill markings.

Type-1 Fonts

Even Type-1 fonts can be imported and exported with Cenon. This function makes Cenon a simple font editor. All vhf fonts (e.g. engraving fonts) were created with Cenon.

All mentioned trade marks are the property of their respective owners.

Cenon System Requirements

These are the system requirements for the different platforms and architectures.

Linux
The easiest way is to start from one of the available Linux distributions. To choose one of the plain GNUstep distributions is not recommened at this time. There are no special requirements for hardware, mostly any modern Computer will do the job.
The GNUstep backend of choice is the Art-Backend because it allows text scaling and text rotation.

      Linux based on a standard distribution:
          o SuSE (vhf offers GNUstep packages)
          o Red Hat
          o Debian
          o Gentoo (Source-Distribution)

      Linux based on a plain GNUstep distribution:
          o GNUstep Live CD (Live CD and Distribution based on Debian)
          o LinuxStep (GNUstep distribution)

      GNUstep Library
          o GNUstep RPMs for SuSE Linux (packages provided by vhf)
          o Debian (GNUstep packages for Debian Linux)

Apple
The easiest way to go.

    * Apple with Power-PC or Intel CPU
    * Mac-OS X, version 10.4 or higher

OpenStep
Still own a version of OpenStep 4.2? On any modern PCs this is a rocket with a slick user experience, the world has not seen again since then. Nowadays not a true option any more without USB support...

    * Intel compatible PC (x86)
    * OpenStep 4.2

Unix in general
Systems like Sun Solaris, Free BSD, Net BSD need to be compiled from source code.

    * Cenon Source Codes
    * GNUstep Core Libraries (Make, Base, GUI)
