About the Internet Public Library

The Internet Public Library is a public service organization and a learning/teaching environment founded at the University of Michigan School of Information and hosted by Drexel University's College of Information Science & Technology.

Welcome to the Internet Public Library! We are the first public library of and for the Internet Community, a free collection of authoritative web resources organized into several broad categories. We’ve created this video to help get you oriented, and hope that it will make it easier for you to use the library’s many features. Now come on, let’s get started.

The Internet Public Library, or IPL, is composed of two main parts: First, it has a collection of links to librarian-approved information web sites on a wide range of topics. And second, it offers a free “ASK A QUESTION” reference service. The IPL also contains over 20,000 books available for free in full-text.

Look at the IPL’s front page. Notice that it is divided into four main columns. The two columns in the center of the page link to staff-selected features and spotlights. These will change over time as new features are created. On the far right are listed current events in the IPL community.

However, the most important column on the page is on the left hand side of the screen. This is where you will find links to all of the various collections found within the IPL. By mouse clicking on each heading, you will be taken to that topic’s collection of resources.

For example, say you are in an astronomy class, and the instructor keeps tossing strange acronyms into his lecture without explaining what they mean. The IPL can help. Simply move your mouse over “Science and Tech,” and click on “Astronomy.” You’ll be taken to a page filled with links to useful astronomy websites. Notice that the second one down explains acronyms.

That’s just one of many collections. Ready Reference contains almanacs, calendars, dictionaries, quotations, and much more. Our TeenSpace section is geared specifically toward teens and their information needs, like writing papers and finding internet communities. Kidspace is filled with great things for young users, including some of the best information on science fairs on the internet.

Finally, the IPL also features a free “ASK A QUESTION” reference service. If you can’t find the answer to your question in the general collection, you can email it to us and our staff of trained librarians from around the world will find you the sources you need.
