Devon Technologies has 4 or 5 useful system service plug-ins for Mac 10.3 plus

Needful Things
Not All Things Macintosh are Expensive

Requirements
Mac OS X 10.3.9 or higher. All services are optimized for both Intel and PowerPC based Macs

BlueService 1.3

Easily send selected plain or rich text—in the form of notes or short messages (SMS) — to Bluetooth–compatible devices directly from your favorite Services-aware Cocoa or Carbon application with a single click. This service is extremely useful if your phone is not yet supported by the Mac OS X Address Book and its SMS capabilities. (For the technophiles out there, BlueService uses OBEX Object Push or OBEX File Transfer).

CalcService 3.3

Need a number, fast? CalcService calculates the results of selected formulas from within all Cocoa applications (such as TextEdit, Mail, iChat, Safari, XCode, or our commercial applications). It then attaches the result to the formula, or replaces the formula with the result. In addition, you can display the result in a panel without modifying the text. With CalcService there is no longer a need to launch Calculator (or any other similar program) if your only need is to calculate some values immediately within text windows or dialog fields.

PDF2RTFService 1.1

PDF2RTFService is a free filter service that enables many Cocoa applications, e.g.TextEdit, to open Adobe PDF, PostScript, and Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) files as paginated rich text documents. (Note: The application just needs to be able to read rich text documents for the service to work). The actual conversion is done by Quartz and the PDFKit of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger; PDF2RTFService post-processes and paginates the output for better results.

WordService 2.7

This service provides 34 functions to convert, format, or speak the currently selected text, as well as insert data or show statistics of the selection within all Cocoa applications (such as TextEdit, Mail, iChat, Safari, XCode, or our commercial applications) and Carbon applications supporting services.

Features:

Reformat, Remove line attachments/endings/links/multiple spaces/multiple feeds/quotes, Trim line beginnings/line endings/lines, Sort lines ascending/descending, Shift left/right, Initial caps of words/sentences, All caps and lowercase, Mac/Windows/Unix line endings, Rotate 13, Straight/Smart Quotes, Encode/Decode tabs, Insert date/date and time/time/contents of path, Speak native/German text, Statistics.

HotService 2.3

HotService, a Cocoa Input Manager bundle, activates the shortcuts for all Mac OS X services, such as WordService, CalcService, or the DEVONthink service, immediately after launching Cocoa applications. HotService 2.0 also moves the Services menu to the top level of the menu bar, next to the Window menu. Note: This Services menu is only visible in true Cocoa applications, such as TextEdit, Mail, or our commercial applications.

HotService does not work any more on Mac OS X 10.5 and higher as Mac OS X 10.5 disables all Input Managers.
