  Hosn owe

1 Idea of the game
"Hosn owe" is a card game played by two to nine people, which is also known as "Schwimmen", "Schnauz" or "Knack" (especially in Germany). In english it is known as "Thirty-one" or "Blitz".  Each player tries to achieve a combination, as valuable as possible, by exchanging cards. At the end of a round the player with the fewest points must pay a stake. If he can't do this, he drops out from the game. It played so many rounds until a winner is certain.

2 Game preparation
First of all the stake must be declared. This are in the most cases three tokens (buttons, peanuts, etc.) or three coins of arbitrary value.  After shuffling the cards the starting player deals the cards. He gets the first three cards, which he may take a look at. The player can now decide whether he wants to keep the cards or whether he would like to have new. If he keeps the cards, then he puts three new cards as talon openly on the table. If he doesn't keep the cards, then he puts this as talon openly on the table and gives himself three new cards. Afterwards the remaining players receive three covered cards in the clockwise direction. The remaining cards are put aside for the next round.  The player left of the giver opens then the round.

3 How to play in detail

3.1 Actions
Each player can perform in his turn one of three possible actions. Depending on the played rules also individual actions aren't permitted.

3.1.1 Exchange cards
The player may exchange either one of his cards against a card of the talon or all his cards against all cards of the talon. However, it is never allowed to exchange two cards! Depending on the rules exchanging all cards can mean to lock the round.

3.1.2 Skip
If the player wouldn't like to exchange a card, he can also do without it and simply pass on to the next player. Depending on the rules it is possible that new cards can come into the talon, if all players skip.

3.1.3 Lock
With locking a player signals the end of a round. Each player after the player that has locked, has one more turn. Depending on the rules it is possible that a round ends immediately if a second player locks. In most cases a player locks if he has the opinion that he can't improve his card value anymore.

3.2 End of a round
The end of a round is reached either by locking or by special card combinations named "Blitz" or "Fire". Now the cards are uncovered and rated.

3.2.1 Rating
The cards have the following values:

Ace
11 points

Face cards (King, Queen, Jack)
10 points

Number cards (10, 9, 8, 7)
equivalent number

Only the values of the same card color are added. With three different colors the highest card counts.  Further there are these special card combinations:

Triplet:
Three cards of different color, but with the same symbol. This combination counts 30 1/2 points. Depending on the rules it is possible that this can only apply to the lowest symbol.

Blitz:
Three cards of the same color with the total value of 31 points. This can be achieved only with Ace and two face cards or with Ace, 10 and a face card. Depending on the rules it is possible that the 10 is absolutely necessary. This combination beats all other card values and the round ends immediately if a player achieves it.

Fire:
Three Aces. This combination beats all other card values and the round ends immediately if a player achieves it. Depending on the rules it is possible that this combination is deactivated.

Examples:

* 10 of hearts, Queen of hearts and Jack of diamonds count 10 + 10 = 20 points, since only the 10 of hearts and the Queen of hearts belong to the same color.
* Ace of clubs, King of clubs and 9 of clubs count 11 + 10 + 9 = 30 points.
* 7 of hearts, 8 of clubs and 9 of spades count 9 points (highest card 9 of spades).
* 8 of diamonds, 8 of hearts, 8 of spades count 30 1/2 points.
* Ace of diamonds, Jack of diamonds and 10 of diamonds are "Blitz" (31 points).
* Ace of clubs, Ace of diamonds and Ace of hearts are "Fire".

3.2.2 Deliver stake
After the rating the player with the lowest card value must deliver a stake. If this should be several players, then all these players must pay. With "Fire" must - depending on the rules - all other players pay. If a player delivers his last stake, then nevertheless he may still continue playing - he "swims". If a swimming player had to deliver a stake again, then he drops out of the game.

Special case:
If all players swim and all players have the same card value, then all players would drop out and there would be no winner. Therefore in this case further round is played.  Afterwards a new round begins, whereby the player left from the last giver becomes to the new starting player.

3.3 End of the game
If at the end of a round only a player remains, then the game is over and the player gets the stake of all players.
