JAME 6.0 is a Java fractal graphics platform which supports images and animations.

There is an Older Greyscale Version (4.2 Deluxe) which works on older, unsupported systems.

JAME 6.0 is a Java real-time multi-thread fractal graphics platform which supports images and animations. The core of JAME is the graphics engine which supports layers, filters, effects and alpha composition. You can add or remove layers, groups of layers and filters; you can can also change the opacity of all of these elements to create complex alpha compositions. JAME creates Mandelbrot and Julia fractals and supports zoom, rotation and colour shift. JAME has a lot of formulas and provides sophisticated colouring algorithms; you can also chain the colouring formulas and customize the palettes. Customizing a palette is very easy and powerful; you can control all the colour components, also the alpha channel. The graphics engine is based on the fast approximation algorithm implemented in Xaos, ported in Java language and optimized for the Java environment. JAME supports images and animations. Creating an animation is very easy; JAME can record any action you do and store them as a clip. Clips are stored in a database and can be rendered with different resolutions or frame-rates; you can create many render profiles for every clip. JAME supports batch rendering, caching and encoding of rendered data in different formats; JAME supports JPEG, PNG, BMP, TIFF, AVI and Quicktime formats. The encoders are based on JAI and JMF technologies developed by Sun. JAME is an OSGi compliant application and is bundled with Equinox, the OSGi R4 implementation developed as a subproject of Eclipse. JAME is an expandable platform; plug-ins can be created to provide new features as filters, effects, fractals, formulas and more. JAME is free software and is released under the terms of GPL3 license.

JAME requires the JRE 1.6.0_03 on Windows and Linux and the JRE 1.5.0_14 on MacOSX, a minimum of 512Mb of memory and 50Mb of disk space. For more details, read the installation notes on file readme.txt included in the application folder.

I couldn't get Version 5 OR Version 6 to work on my PPC Macintosh running "Tiger" (OS X 10.4.11)   :(
The grayscale version JAME 4.2 Deluxe Edition worked just fine for me.
