xplanet is a command line program like a Solar System Simulator for Unix/Linux/or Windows systems. Needs a GUI front end program (or at least use one of the included sample scripts) to make it useful to casual users....

Description
Xplanet is a solar system simulator which calculates accurate positions for the major planets and satellites. It displays multiple bodies, eclipse shadows, and customizable labels and markers.
Xplanet is free software, distributed according to the terms of the GNU General Public License (http://www.fsf.org/copyleft/gpl.html).
I've compiled and run Xplanet successfully on i386 GNU/Linux systems, Sparc Solaris, FreeBSD, and Microsoft Windows under the Cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com/) environment. Xplanet runs under Darwin and X windows as well as under Mac OS X with Aqua.
Xplanet was inspired by Xearth, which renders an image of the earth into the X root window. All of the major planets and most satellites can be drawn, similar to the Solar System Simulator. A number of different map projections are also supported, including azimuthal, Lambert, Mercator, Mollweide, orthographic, and rectangular.
